36 arrested for suspected DUI

Police arrested 36 drivers for suspected drunken driving between March 11 and Monday; eight were involved in traffic accidents and four drivers were under age 21.

Police have made 277 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 302 during the same period in 2012, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested 19 motorists and Kona arrested 12 drivers. Puna and South Kohala officers arrested two motorists in each district while Hamakua officers arrested one driver, police said.

There have been 274 major accidents this year compared with 332 during the same period in 2012. To date, there have been 10 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with seven at this time in 2012. Two of the fatalities this year were related to drugs, police said.
